Harley Quinn’s “Birds of Prey” and the Choice of Story and Casting

Birds of Prey movie

It has been recently announced that Margot Robbie will co-produce a Birds of Prey movie set to be released in 2020. Many comic book fans may have mixed feelings about this when it comes to casting choice as well as the fact that this movie is being led by Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. We know from the comics that Harley Quinn was never part of Birds of Prey, she was however, part of the Gotham City Sirens. What baffles me is why Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment is allowing the Birds of Prey to be told this way. I have always had an issue with changing the story of a comic book or novel because if people go watch a movie and have not read any of the source material, they will think that the movie adaptation is the real story when it’s not. This is why Hollywood gets a lot of backlash from fans who are familiar with the source material and see a drastic change in the movie adaptation because it doesn’t ring true to them.

There has also been some recent news surrounding the casting for Birds of Prey for the character of Black Canary. News sources have revealed recently that Black Canary will not be portrayed by a white actress instead we will get a black actress. Now, there is nothing wrong with black actresses in superhero movie roles but at least give them roles for black characters that have not gotten any attention. That would make more sense instead of switching races of established characters. Both DC and Marvel comics have plenty of minority characters to choose from that perhaps have not gotten the attention they deserve. This is another reason for backlash from fans that hollywood receives.

Around the web and on YouTube, people have been commenting on the development of this movie, Birds of Prey. Some have claimed that perhaps Margot Robbie’s decision to cast a minority actress for Black Canary is because Black Canary is a blonde just like Harley Quinn and Margot Robbie doesn’t want any competition. If that were to be true, it would make Margot Robbie a selfish actress and perhaps thinking herself to be some Hollywood Diva. Warner Brothers and DC Comics are focusing too much on Harley Quinn when they have many other characters the deserve their time in the spotlight.
